Pennsylvania Neighborhood Fills Growing Pothole With Christmas Tree

Residents in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania had a seasonal solution to a growing pothole problem - simply put a Christmas tree in it.

According to residents who lived near the massive pothole, the hole had been growing over the last few weeks, with no sign from the city that they were going to send out crews to fix it.

After a few weeks of waiting, resident Marietta Spak became fed up, and decided that rather than wait for the city to fix the problem, she would go ahead and do something about the pothole herself.

"I was upstairs in the attic and was looking for more Christmas decorations and thought, 'That would look nice in the hole,'" Spak told Fox 43.

Spak says she dragged her artificial Christmas tree out to the pothole in an effort to draw attention to the problem and try to keep drivers from hitting the hole.

"It can cause so many problems with these holes. That's not just a pothole. That's sinkage, and it's starting to spider web," Spak said.

Spak wasn't the only one to embrace the impromptu Christmas cheer. Other neighbors added ornaments, and even a plastic Santa Claus to the pothole as it continued to grow.

Wilkes-Barre DPW says they're aware of the pothole and the holiday decorations. The city says they were delayed fixing the pothole, because the company they contract to fix these types of things had been backed up with other jobs.

For now, the pothole, turned sinkhole, has been covered with a metal slab until the company can come and put in a permanent fix later this week.
